One to Watch: Tang Wei

One to Watch: Tang Wei

Being a major film buff, I like to keep my eyes on up-and-coming actors and actresses. There is always a new crop of entertainers each year that seep into our orbit. With talent, beauty, grace, and charisma you'd think stardom would be easy to achieve, but it happens for so few.

In this new column called, "One to Watch" we identify those who are not only beautiful, but may just have the goods to stick around for a while. Our fist pick is the breathtaking Chinese beauty, Tang Wei.

Few actors are as lucky as Ms. Wei to have her breakout role in one of the most anticipated film of the year, Ang Lee's "LUST CAUTION". If you recall, Mr. Lee launched the career of another Asian beauty...the breathtaking Zhang Ziyi in "CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON".

"LUST CAUTION" is based on a short story written in 1950, and is said to be loosely based on actual events, set in Shanghai during the World War II era. The espionage thriller follows a young woman Wang Jiazhi, played by Tang Wei, as she gets involved in a dangerous game of emotional intrigue with a
powerful political figure, Mr. Yee played by legendary film actor, Tony Leung.

The clothing and makeup in this film is absolutely beautiful. We're willing to bet Tang Wei is a name you'll be hearing a lot of soon.

Fun fact: Tang Wei is an aspiring writer and director in addition to being an actress. She graduated from the directing department of the Central Academy of Drama in Beijing. Beauty with brains...love it.

Surley this woman deserves an acadamy award nomination for her brave work. Not that the oscars mean that much anymore. But it would be nice if she got a nomination at least.

Ms. Tang, not Ms. Wei. Tang is one of Chinese surnames. The word 'tang' (when not used as surname)means soup. The 'tang' in 'Tang Dynasty' is a different word. This particular 'wei' means 'the one', or 'only one'. Many other Chinese words also pronounce 'wei'.

FYI - The beauty is Ms. Tang, not Ms. Wei. Chinese people put their surname first, often even when translated in English. Another example is Chow Yun Fat. He is Mr. Chow, not Mr. Fat! You can only be sure in cases like Tony Leung that Leung is his surname, since he uses a westernized first name. If you are not sure, spell the whole name Tang Wei. The "last name" concept doesn't apply to a lot of cultures.

Thanks for the advice, but it's not needed. Being of Asian decent myself, I fully understand the Eastern name structure. Although some may find it inappropriate when I call Sienna Miller, Ms. Sienna...or Natalie Portman, Ms. Natalie...I do it anyway, because this is a blog...and I think some poetic license is permitted, especially since it's mine. Thanks though, Ms. Anonymous. -Ben

When we're using Chinese names, we usually say 2 syllables. So we will address Zhang Ziyi as Ziyi. But for someone like Tang Wei, we will address her as "Tang Wei", and seldom "Wei". So what you really mean is "Ms Tang Wei".

No...I meant what I wrote...correct or not, Ms. Anonymous. Aren't blogs wonderful things? I get to write in the structure of my choosing and you get to remain anonymous and leave comments that have absolutely nothing to do with the stunning beauty of Ms. Wei. Fun.

As a fellow movie junkie, I was watching all of the new previews at Apple.com last night and actually came upon the trailer Caution, Lust last night. I had the same thought- something about Tang Lei is very compelling and I would not be at all surprised if we started seeing a lot more of her. Ang has always had an eye...Nice spot!

I just saw the movie. She speaks mandarin, shanghainese, cantonese, and English! All very fluently! Her acting in the movie is impeccable. Love it!
